How to Clean Up From a Sewage Backup

Sewage backup is something no one wants to deal with, but it can happen in any home.  It does not only present unpleasant odors, it can also pose an imminent threat to your health and your property.

Sewage cleanup is best left in the hands of professionals. But there are some precautionary measures you should take to limit the extent of damage. Here’s what you need to do after a sewage backup.

Wear protective equipment

Sewer water contains pathogens that are harmful to humans. Being exposed to sewage water can pose a health threat to you and your family. So if you are attempting to do cleanup on your own, make sure that you wear protective equipment like gloves, mask, and boots. Avoid splashing contaminated water as it can cause skin irritation. Also, make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly after cleanup.

Get rid of as much water as you can

Water can spread throughout your property in a short span of time. The longer you wait, the more damage it can cause. As such, it is important to start clean up immediately.

To start, try to get rid of as much water as you can. It is fine to do clean up on your own if the contaminated area is small. But if part of your home, the basement for instance,  is flooded with sewage water, it is best to stop here and hire a professional to take care of the job.

Sanitize and disinfect affected areas

Clean and sanitize the floors, walls, and other surfaces that have come in contact with sewage water. Mix one cup of bleach in two gallons of water. Wipe affected surfaces with bleach solution.

Make sure that everything is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized to prevent you and your family from getting sick. Porous materials like carpets, drapery, and clothing should be discarded. They cannot be adequately cleaned with normal laundering.

Dry it out

Now that everything is cleaned, a complete dry out of all the exposed materials and surfaces are necessary. Otherwise, mold may start growing. Remember, a moist environment is the perfect breeding ground for mold.
