Many Boulder homes sit on sewer lines that are 60 years old or older. When one of those lines fails, the repair is the homeowner’s responsibility, which is why sewer line repair in Boulder should start with a clear look inside the pipe. Go Direct Services is a family-owned sewer and water line contractor. We serve Boulder neighborhoods including University Hill, Mapleton Hill, Whittier, Martin Acres and Table Mesa, along with Louisville, Lafayette and Superior.

Who is responsible for sewer line repair in Boulder?

The City of Boulder says homeowners are responsible for their sewer service all the way to the city main. That covers the whole run of pipe from the house out to the main.

It’s a good reason to know your line’s condition before it fails. A camera inspection is the first step, because it shows where a problem sits along that run and how serious it is.

Work near the main can mean opening the street or alley. Tap work often runs into five figures due to street cuts, traffic control and permits. Our sewer tap repair guide explains what that job involves.

Clay pipe and big trees: why Boulder sewer lines back up

University Hill, Mapleton Hill and central Boulder often have original clay sewer pipe. Clay was laid in short sections, with a joint every few feet. Each joint is a weak point.

Boulder’s big old trees make that worse. Roots push into the joints looking for water, then keep growing inside the pipe. They snag paper and waste, and as they thicken they can crack the clay.

Cleaning clears the roots for a while. If they are coming in at several joints, they grow back, and the pipe keeps weakening.

Signs of roots or a failing sewer line in a Boulder home

  • Slow drains throughout the house, often worse after heavy water use
  • A backup in the basement floor drain, sometimes on laundry day
  • Clogs that return on a regular cycle after cleaning
  • Gurgling toilets or a sewage smell in the basement
  • A sunken or soggy spot, or extra-green grass, along the line’s path
  • For the water line: low pressure, rusty water or an unexplained jump in the bill

A clog that comes back on a schedule is the classic root pattern. It usually means the cause is in the pipe, not in what’s going down the drain.

Camera first: repair, replace or just clean?

Our sewer camera inspection is $99. We record the line from an access point out to the main and show you every root, crack and joint we find.

  • Light roots, pipe intact: drain cleaning ($280) or hydro jetting (about $1,000). This buys time, but it doesn’t seal the joints.
  • Damage in one section: a spot repair replaces that piece, often with a new clean-out for easier access later.
  • Clay cracked or root-filled along its length: full replacement. On a clay line that has been in the ground for decades, this is often the more sensible spend.

We’ll tell you plainly when a repair would be a patch on a line that is failing everywhere else.

Is pipe bursting a fit under Boulder’s mature trees and landscaping?

Open trenching through an established yard can disturb landscaping, walkways and the roots of trees you want to keep. Pipe bursting replaces the sewer line from two small pits instead. A bursting head breaks the old clay apart as it is pulled through, and new seamless pipe follows right behind it.

Clay is brittle, so it breaks apart readily during bursting. The line does need to run fairly straight, and a collapsed or badly misaligned section may need to be dug. We’ll tell you which applies after the camera inspection.

We do not do pipe lining. Learn how trenchless pipe bursting works.

Water line repair for Boulder homes

Your water service line carries water from the street into the house. In older homes it may be galvanized steel, which rusts from the inside and narrows, or older copper that can develop pinhole leaks.

When a leak is hidden, we do exploratory leak excavation to find it. If the line is aging out, replacing it is usually smarter than chasing one leak after another. We confirm the right utility and permit for your address before work starts.

Warranties, financing and selling your home

Our warranties are in writing and transfer to the next owner:

  • Full sewer or water line replacement: 20 years
  • Trenchless pipe bursting: 10 years
  • Spot repairs: 3–5 years

That transfer matters when an older Boulder home changes hands. If you are buying or selling, see our page for realtors and home buyers.

To pay over time, qualifying jobs can use our in-house plan: 0% for up to 12 months, 20% down, no credit check and autopay. Larger jobs can use Wisetack monthly payments, subject to credit approval.

We also serve nearby Broomfield and Westminster.

Boulder sewer line repair FAQ

Am I responsible for the sewer line out to the main?

Yes. The City of Boulder says homeowners are responsible for their sewer service all the way to the city main. A camera inspection shows where along that run a problem sits.

Do you also work in Louisville, Lafayette and Superior?

Yes, we serve all three as well as Boulder. Utilities and permits vary by city, so we confirm the right ones for your address before work starts.

Will cutting the roots solve the problem?

Cutting or jetting clears roots for now. In clay pipe, roots usually return through the same joints, so repeat clogs are a sign the pipe needs repair or replacement.

My line is over 60 years old but working fine. Should I scope it?

It is worth $99 to know where you stand, especially before buying, selling or remodeling. Finding roots and cracks early gives you time to plan.

Can you replace a clay line without a trench across my yard?

Often, with pipe bursting from two small pits. If part of the line is collapsed or badly out of line, we may need to dig at that spot.

Can I see the roots on the video?

Yes. We record the inspection and walk you through it, so you see where roots come in and how far out along the line they are.
